Apple has bought an AR headset startup called Mira.
🕶️ Apple’s ambitious augmented reality pursuit continues with another acquisition!
👏 According to sources, Apple has acquired Mira, an L.A.-based AR startup that makes headsets for other companies and the US military.
💰 While uncertainties remain on how much Apple paid for Mira’s acquisition, it’s no secret that Mira raised around $17 million in funding to date. Also interesting to note: Ive, Apple’s former design chief, was an advisor to Mira at one point.
🛡️ Mira’s military contracts include a small agreement with the US Air Force and a $702,351 agreement with the Navy, both for military purposes.
🌐 Another significant contract Mira has is with Nintendo World, which uses its headsets for the Mario Kart ride. Mira’s headset displays virtual characters and complements the game as one progresses through the ride.
🙌 Apple now has at least 11 of Mira's employees as part of the acquisition. According to Mira CEO, "7 year journey from dorm room to acquisition."
💡 This acquisition indicates that Apple’s AR pursuits are continuing, and it is testing the waters to provide AR hardware as well as software solutions.
