OpenAI co-founder on company’s past approach to openly sharing research: ‘We were wrong’ 🦹♂️
🤖 OpenAI's GPT-4 lack of public information has disappointed many in the AI community 😞. OpenAI has shared benchmark results and demos 😮, but no data on training, energy costs, or methods used 🔍.
🔒 Perspectives on open or closed AI research vary vastly from person to person. Open-sourcing allows more access and building, while closed protects IP and prevents replication. But it can also create issues for transparency and accountability 😕.
As much as I value open-source applications, I can definitely appreciate the potential negative consequences when it comes to making the source code of AI systems publicly available 🤔, one outcome could be enabling malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities and use AI for nefarious purposes 🦹♂️.
We need to delve deeper to mitigate the unintended consequences that may arise from implementing innovative AI technologies. Exploration and discussion are required to ensure that the benefits of AI are not overshadowed by any negative impacts. 💡
⚖️ The AI community must balance open and closed research to protect IP while ensuring transparency, accountability and security. These discussions must be at the heart of conversations around AI.
