Powerful artificial intelligence ban possible, government adviser warns 🤖
💭 Narrow AI systems could be regulated like existing technology, but AGI systems require more inbuilt safety technology and strong transparency and audit requirements, according to Member of the UK government's AI Council and CEO of Faculty AI, Mark Warner.
🏥 Faculty AI's tools have already made a considerable impact in helping forecast demand for NHS services during the pandemic; however, the company's political connections have attracted scrutiny.
🛑 As humanity's intelligence is the reason it's in its position of primacy on this planet, having algorithms as smart or smarter than humans presents a significant risk. There's a strong argument that at some point, governments may decide to ban these algorithms above a specific complexity or amount of compute.
💼 The UK could find a competitive advantage in encouraging AI safety, as we need safety standards to get value out of the technology.
✅ It's important to establish voluntary codes of conduct that are open to a wide universe of countries, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.
