That panicky call from a relative? It could be a thief using a voice clone, FTC warns π¨
π¨ Scammers can now clone your voice using AI and use this to trick you into giving them money!
π± With the cost of voice cloning dropping, even small-time crooks can use it to impersonate friends, family or authority figures in order to scam innocent people out of their hard-earned money.
π The Federal Trade Commission has warned people to be vigilant for calls from people using voice clones generated by artificial intelligence, which is one of the latest techniques used by criminals hoping to swindle people out of money. The scammer needs only a short audio clip of your loved oneβs voice from content posted online, and a voice-cloning program. When they call you, theyβll sound just like your loved one.
π What can you do to stop this scam? If youβre not sure it's a friend or relative, hang up and call them back immediately to verify their claims, especially if they ask for money via wire-transfer, cryptocurrency or gift card!
π§ This scam might sound like a plot from a science fiction story, but it is happening in our daily lives right now. We should all remain alert to the risks and take extra care when receiving calls from people who are asking for money.
