UK Plan To Lead In Generative AI ‘Unrealistic,’ Say Cambridge Researchers 📊
🚀 UK's goal to turn itself into a global leader in generative AI development is labeled as 'unrealistic' by Cambridge researchers.
💡 After evaluating the report, it's evident that the country lacks both the necessary capital investment and computing power to build generative AI fast enough to compete with tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.
📊 While the computing cost for ChatGPT is estimated at $40mn per month, the government's newly minted Frontier AI Taskforce only allocated an initial budget of £100mn for the development of homegrown AI.
🖥️ Despite the critical importance of computing hardware, the UK holds no significant clusters of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) - necessary to process large data amounts for machine-learning models.
🔮 From what I see, the country's £900mn supercomputer devoted to AI research in Bristol won't be operational until 2026. This is another missed opportunity for the UK in this dynamic technological race.
🔐 It's clear that a new focus is needed, leveraging the country’s strengths in cybersecurity, fintech, and health tech to build software. This shift could lead to real-world applications of generative AI, instead of clinging to aiming to lead in foundational model development.
⚖️ But for this new plan to achieve success, a tangible legal and ethical AI regulation must be implemented. Something that fosters trust both among the public and businesses while simultaneously offering tax incentives to companies developing AI-powered services or using generative AI in their operations.
👥 I can only see the economic benefits of AI will only come to fruition if the technology can be trusted. And trust can only be ensured through significant legislation and regulation. The UK's current approach just doesn't seem to grasp that key concept.
💼 I strongly believe the best strategy should encompass not only the desire to lead but also the ability — and willingness — to practically and ethically apply new technologies for the benefit of society.
