Will Meta’s massive leak democratise AI and at what cost? 🤖
🤖 Meta’s latest ChatGPT-style “large language model” LLaMA is now open to use by researchers, as it aims to democratize AI and free up foundational research otherwise restricted by the high cost of AI models.
👍🏼 The new model is known for its efficiency, smaller size, and cheaper running cost. However, access to LLaMA for research and development will be granted on a case-by-case basis.
🤝 With many big tech companies churning up their own models, owning AI models for future tech is crucial to remain competitive. Google’s LaMDA and OpenAI’s GPT are two other models making noise in the industry.
🔍 Open AI’s GPT has managed to retain its competitiveness with licensing options to other companies. However, Meta’s move to be more ‘open’ in releasing LLaMA may potentially alter how companies compete in this realm.
🌍 The whole LLaMA model was leaked online for anyone to use, raising questions about Meta's reaction and integrity with regards to the model. Some have accused the company of western bias to those who are deemed eligible.
